Book Club Recap April

I love being a part of a book club. Expanding what I read, a chance to catch up with friends and of course the cheese boards.
We have read a couple of books this year and I have loved them all so far.

BECOMING

Michelle Obama's autobiography. I don't typically pick biographic books, but that is the best part of book club. Reading something different. Learning more about Michelle and who she is other than what the media has made her out to be is interesting. She is honest about who she is and her feelings about the Obama family's journey to the White House.

THE NEST

Set in post 9/11 and 2008 financial crisis New York , this book follows a family of four and their dependence on their inheritance. Each sibling struggling with their future whose bond seems to only be their beloved nest.

DAISY JONES & THE SIX

The 70s plus rock stars. This novel gave me major Almost Famous feels. Following Daisy Jones and the band The Six, the artists look back on their rise to fame and how it all ended. I just finished this one and thought it was so well written from start to finish!

Easter 2019 Looks

Easter is only two weeks away!
I have been trying to do one nice thing a day for my Lenten promise as well as not eating meat on Fridays. Some days it is tough because I might not interact with someone, but I love that it is an intentional effort to make someone else's day a little better.  I got this idea from a family member who had done it a few years ago.
Celebrating Easter with our families holds so many precious memories for us. The message of hope and forgiveness always feels so refreshing.
Of course you want to look your best when celebrating that He has risen.

Below are my top picks for Easter options!

St. Paddy's Day

As a former Savannah, Georgia resident and confirmed 38 % Irish (thanks Ancestry DNA) there is never such a thing as too much green!
While Atlanta's parade isn't as grand as Savannah, and there is no river coloring like Chicago or New York, I still believe you will get pinched if you don't wear green on St. Patrick's Day.
Below are some of my favorite green tops and outfits!

72 Hours in Asheville

When we got married, I made Jared promise me at least one vacation a year. So for year three we decided to head to Asheville, NC just a short drive away from our hometown of Atlanta.

This city is so unique and the food is amazing!
We stayed downtown so we could easily walk to most things and explore.

Day 1:
Since it is such a short drive from Atlanta we arrived Friday early afternoon and went straight to Sierra Nevada Brewing

We grabbed lunch and everything was delicious! The food is consider tapas style, but I would say it is more than your average tapas. Post lunch we went on the 'self-guided' tour which was impressive to get a peek at their operations.

Post lunch we checked into the hotel and relaxed for a minute before exploring downtown. Jared's one request was to go to the Pinball Museum. We walked in and discovered it is more of an active arcade with historic and restored pinball machines.
If you love arcade games or just like nostalgia, it is worth the visit! It was about $30 for both of us to play and they have a bar!
It was so fun to  just to try them all out! Your entry fee gives you unlimited play on the games.

Once we had our fill we headed over to The Montford Rooftop to grab a drink before dinner. This small bar serves up craft cocktails and amazing views.  There are several rooftop bars in Asheville, but this is a hidden gem!

We capped off the evening with dinner at Buxton Hall BBQ
A fun take on barbeque, everything was absolutely delicious. The fried chicken sandwich and banana pudding pie are must try items!
It is connected to Catawaba Brewing, so if there is a wait and the bar is full we suggest just heading next door!

Live music is all over Asheville, especially at the Funkatorium. If you are a fan of Wicked Weed head to this smaller pub owned by them serving up the same sour beers with a great patio and live music!

Day 2:
Full of local coffee shops you really can't go wrong. We tried out a few! Post coffee we walked around explored shops until we were ready for lunch.

Izzy's Coffee Shop on N. Lexington
Double D's, a cool coffee shop in a double decker bus!
The Hole, actually a donut shop, but the nitro brew coffee is delicious!

For lunch we headed out to the River Arts district to Taco Billy (p.s. right down the street from HOLE). This taco shop was SO GOOD. The front of the shop feels small, but there is a porch in the back in the front is packed. You can either build your own or pick from their specialty tacos (chicken, pork, veggie, etc)

Breweries:
Archetype: a fun award winning brewery in the river arts district. Perfect place to go after Taco Billy. Try the Liminal Being if you like pale ales!

New Belgium: I think this was my favorite one! Amazing views along the river and a fun atmosphere. We also just happened to be there for the launch of their Mural beer. Also, super pup friendly and still a little bit outside of town.

Green Man Brewing: This brewery feels like you are inside of a mountain. Definitely smaller, but great atmosphere and the deck has amazing views too.

Burial: Great beer and open environment.

High wire: Tasty brews and you can't miss this colorful building!

After a while we were a little beer'd out. So we went and grabbed a cocktail at Antidote. You have to be a member to get access, but don't worry membership is only 8 cents. I got the punch du jour and it was so yum. The rooftop is complete with a fire place and comfy seating.

Asheville Brewing Company on Cox Avenue is a pizza lovers dream. The name is deceiving, but definitely go there for pizza. The tater tots are also amazing. The brews are just a bonus!

Of course post pizza, if you are still wanting to check out the music and bar scene below are some of the places we went/were recommended to us.

Bars:
Jack of the Wood
The Grey Eagle
Ben's Tune Up
Social Lounge

Day 3:

We finished our time up in Asheville at Biscuit Head! Super yummy biscuits. They have every type of biscuit you could think of plus a jam bar!

We LOVED Asheville and hope you do too!

Jared's Dirty Thirty

It happened.
Jared turned 30 this past weekend!

We started dating when he was 21 and I had just turned 20.
It is crazy to think about all the birthdays we have celebrated together.

As most people do with 30 birthdays I wanted this one to be special, but also I have just always loved celebrating birthdays.

Jared loves everything from the 80s.
Fun fact, he secretly wants to be in a big hair 80s band.
So when it came to thinking of a theme for his party, I didn't have to think too long.

I had been traveling a lot of work right before his birthday so thank goodness for Amazon, Great American Cookies and Publix! I also order custom koozies from Ember Lifestyle, Magnum PI themed to go with Jared's costume.

He had the best time with the best of friends and family!
A huge shout out to everyone who dressed up and came over to celebrate!

Karaoke always takes a minute for people to warm up to, but it was a huge hit! I love these BONAOK portable blue tooth mics, because they are under $30 and  all you need is a Karaoke app!
I wish I took more pictures but we were having too much fun!

January 2019: Favorites

January always starts with such resolve.
People making promises to themselves and others. Declaring it out loud, or on social media, to help keep themselves accountable.
I love a fresh start, but January has felt like the longest month ever. Maybe because it is so cold outside?
PLUS SIDE:
Jared and I are eating healthier, being each other's accountability buddies and trying new things! I still have items to cross off my goal list throughout the year, but for now we are on the right track.
I've linked  my top 5 favorite things from this past month!

I live in this camo sweatshirt!
I've had been looking for one for the longest time
and finally found this one at Target!  You can't beat the $18 price.
Our air fryer is one of our favorite Christmas gifts.
To be honest I wasn't sure how much we would use it,
but it is perfect for quick meals, drying fruit and it isn't messy.
Easy cleanup is always a win in my book!
This brush is my absolute favorite!
It doesn't tear my hair out and is perfect for de-tangling before a blow dry!
This travel size makes it easy to pack and take on work trips.
The booties I got for Christmas and have been non-stop since!
I love Nordstrom's BP booties. They last for years are are great quality.
With the Orangetheory transformation challenge in full swing,
I am grateful for my HIIT pair of sneakers!
I have another pair for running outside,
but these are perfect for class and casual wear!

New Year, New Goals: 2019

For the past two years, I have been setting goals for myself instead of resolutions. I know, I know they are the same thing to some people.  I just feel resolutions seem absolute and goals are things you can work towards. There is less pressure to do a complete change. It has helped me make lifestyle changes, like drink more water. I now don't drink sodas. Or read more, now I read about a book a month with my book club gals.

My 2018 list consisted of:

  • More yoga NOPE
  • Go to brunch more YEP
  • Hike Suwanee Mountain NOPE
  • Visit Sweetwater Creek Park YEP
  • Write more thank you notes YEP
  • Go to church more YEP
  • Blog once a week SOMETIMES

I was able to accomplish about half of this list so not too bad, but I know I need to re-group and re-focus. Last year wasn't the easiest year. Other things became more important than some of these goals. I hate to say it, but that is life, priorities change.
But, a new year brings new promise with it.
So like the past two years, I have written out my goals for this year so in a year's time I can reflect on all the good, the bad and the time in between.

2019:
  • Run moreI really fell off the wagon last year and I miss it. Who am I?
  • Hike Suwanee MountainI still really really really want to do this!
  • Write more thank you notesI've gotten better, but still want to push myself to do more
  • More yoga: adding this one again. I need more flexibility in my life.
  • Create a better blog site: This blog is something I enjoy and started as an outlet. I feel like I need to take more time to plan it out.
